Collection: Honey Lea Gaydos – Journey in the Making

This exhibition showcases the interactive journals that I make called Moments. Moments are not like traditional journals full of blank pages waiting to be filled. Instead, they are already full- of beautiful papers, trims, and ephemera from antique, vintage or contemporary sources. These journals are meant to capture ideas and memories and moments in time. There are flip outs, flip ups, pockets, tucks and envelopes where notes and memorabilia can be hidden in plain sight. A little like a scrapbook, a little like a journal, a little like a notebook, Moments are meant to be explored and used and enjoyed.

My intention with this show has been to discover creative ways to bind the pages together and to express as many different styles as possible within the overall vintage vibe that I prefer. You’ll find everything from Steampunk to Shabby Chic among these Moments.

One Moment journal takes about a month to complete. Each is unique but the making process is essentially the same. First, I decide on a story or theme for the journal usually inspired by something I’ve seen or read. Then, I become a hunter-gatherer sourcing digital designs, papers, trims, hardware, and other items from a variety of makers and countries. I decide on size, binding technique, and covers. Next, I usually hand dye at least some of the papers with coffee or tea. All images that are not my own are either public domain or used with permission.

And then the making begins! There are different places to start the construction depending on the type of binding and the story. I use many different techniques, tools, and media to create the effects I want, but I’m especially drawn to collage, inks, washi tapes, waxed threads, bronze hardware, and vintage or antique laces from around the world.

Each Moment includes a card describing its unique details and because my name is Honey, you will always find a bee somewhere in the journal.

I do commission Moments on occasion, so if you are inspired but want a particular kind of Moment, just let our lovely Auric Gallery owners know.
