Brie Varney

Brie Varney is an oil painter whose work uses geometric shapes and lines to reimagine
landscapes and still life. Known for her distinctive “stained glass” style, she seeks to simplify and rationalize the world through color and form. Her artistic influences include Vincent van Gogh, Jacoba van Heemskerck, Larisa Aukon, and Piet Mondrian.

Raised in Northern Virginia, Brie began drawing and painting in childhood before branching into black-and-white photography and figure drawing. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Art & Design from North Carolina State University, and later studied plein air painting under Colorado Springs artist Chris Alvarez.

Brie believes the role of a visual artist is to teach people how to see. She embraces the
challenge of both looking deeply and helping others to do the same. For her, art is an iterative process—returning to ideas and images with fresh eyes, uncovering overlooked details, and discovering new connections. Through this process, her intention is to share her vision in a way that invites viewers not only to see, but to look again.

Brie’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the Pikes Peak region. Her paintings are
featured on a public library card design and as part of Manitou Springs’ Creek walk public art
project.
Brie lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, three children, and two cats. When
she’s not painting, she can usually be found playing ice hockey, enjoying the outdoors, or curled up with a good book.
